What to Pack for the Perfect Summer Pony Day

What to Pack for the Perfect Summer Pony Day

We're mid way through August and the summer holidays are flying by. Perhaps you have already enjoyed a summer holiday, Pony Camp is over and the start of the new term is looming. However with the slightly cooler weather now arriving it is the perfect time to enjoy a family pony day at the yard. Make the most of the lighter days and enjoy a beautiful hack, grooming session and some pony pampering time. Some times the simplest days with the ponies really are the most enjoyable ones. But what should you pack for a day at the stables to ensure both humans and ponies have the best day?

  • A lightweight Comfortable Riding Outfit - The right riding clothing is important, especially with the changeable temperatures of the UK weather. Lightweight riding tights are a great choice for summer as they allow riders to stay comfortable both on and off the horse. Pair them with a breathable riding top and comfortable riding socks. Riding boots are needed for time in the saddle but take a change of footwear for messing about on the yard. If you're planning on staying into the evening when the temperatures might drop, a casual horsey hoodie is great to pop on as an additional layer.
  • A Water Bottle - Staying hydrated is especially important for all members of the family and you can encourage your pony mad kid to keep drinking her water with a pony themed water bottle. Popular at the moment is the Miss Melody Pony Blossom Drinks Bottle. Plus it features a secure cap to stop the ponies getting to it and is the perfect size for kids to keep to hand at the yard. Fill up before you head to the stables and take plenty of extra water with you for refills.
  • Pony Treats - Keep the ponies happy with some of their favourite treat. If you haven't had time to head to the local saddlery horses are often just as happy with supermarket snacks - ours love apples, carrots and even parsnips.
  • Pony Bathing Stuff - Summer is the perfect time for bathing ponies so make the most of it before winter arrives back with us. Okay so they may well go out and roll but it's a nice way to cool down both yourself and your horse after a ride and rolling is often a sign of a happy horse. This season the new Fizzy Fillies have been flying out the doors here. They are so simple and easy to use and you don't have to worry about getting it all out of the coat as they are a no rinse formula.
  • Grooming Essentials - Use the day to put all the brushes in your grooming kit to good use, then have a sort out and give them a clean once your pony is shining. The brushes can dry in the sun and your they will be looking as good as new ready for your pony's next pre ride grooming session.
  • Sun Cream - A day at the yard usually means plenty of time outdoors, so sun protection shouldn't be forgotten. Depending on your horse's coat colour it could be that your horse needs some sun block too for their pink nose! A sun hat and sunglasses are also useful for time spent away from the saddle.
  • A Pony Picnic - Riding and yard work can be surprisingly tiring, particularly on a warm summer day. Pack a few easy snacks to keep energy levels up between rides. Fruit, sandwiches, crackers and cereal bars are all easy options for a busy day at the yard. And if you're making a whole day of it, why not turn lunchtime into a little pony picnic. Take your favourite foods to the yard in your very own Tyrrell Katz Horse Lunch Box to keep them safe and secure from any cheeky ponies.
  • Spare Change of Clothes - Even when the sun is shining, the combination of kids and horses means that everyone always ends up filthy! A spare outfit is always worth packing, particularly if you're going to be at the yard all day. Spare kids riding socks are handy because you can often end up getting wet feet when bathing (or is that just me?). A t shirt is great to change into once the riding is over, plus a hoodie for when the sun goes down. Don't forget you might need a plastic bag to throw the wet/ dirty clothes into before they get put into the car.
  • Something To Do Between Rides - If children are taking it in turn to ride, or perhaps you might end up chatting to other mums at the yard its good to have a little activity to keep young minds busy when away from the ponies. Pack something for the quieter moments of the day. The Pony Creative Books are a great range for active young riders keen to learn about horse management.

Summer is arguably one of the best times of year to be a young (or older!) rider. From early morning rides to staying up later for long evenings at the yard and picnics with ponies and friends, there are so many opportunities to make special memories. Enjoy!
